From the Middle Ages<\/a> onwards, the city of Cluj has been a multicultural city with a diverse cultural and religious life. Today Cluj-Napoca is a city \u00a0located in the central part of Transylvania<\/a> and is the main University Center.<\/p>\n

If you are visiting the city you must see \u00a0the Cluj-Napoca Botanical Garden<\/a> organized like a park. The city has also a number of other parks, of which the largest is the Central Park<\/a>. This park was founded during the 19th century and includes an artificial lake with an island, as well as the largest casino in the city, Chios<\/em>..<\/sup>Cluj-Napoca has a number of landmark buildings and monuments. One of those is the Saint Michael’s Church<\/a> in Unirii Square<\/a>, built at the end of the 14th century in the Gothic style<\/a> of that period. It was only in the 19th century that the Neo-Gothic<\/a> tower of the church was erected; it remains the tallest church tower in Romania to this day.The Orthodox Church’s<\/a> equivalent to St. Michael’s Church is the Orthodox Cathedral<\/a> on Avram Iancu Square<\/a>, built in the interwar<\/a> era. The Romanian Greek-Catholic Church<\/a> also has a cathedral in Cluj-Napoca, Transfiguration Cathedral<\/a>. Cluj-Napoca is also an important regional commercial centre, with many restaurants , street malls<\/a> and hypermarkets<\/a> and also has a diverse and growing cultural scene, with cultural life exhibited in a number of fields, including the visual arts<\/a>, performing arts<\/a> and nightlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Two other summer resorts are also included in the metropolitan area, namely Cojocna<\/a> and Some\u0219eni<\/a> Baths.<\/p>\n

For those interested in history there are a large number of castles in the countryside surroundings, constructed by wealthy medieval families living in the city. The most notable of them is the Bon\u021bida B\u00e1nffy Castle<\/a>, once known as “the Versailles<\/a> of Transylvania”in the nearby village of Bon\u021bida<\/a>, 32 kilometres (20\u00a0mi) from the city centre. There are other castles located in the vicinity of the city.<\/p>\n

Near Cluj-Napoca city is situated\u00a0 The Nicula<\/a> Monastery, erected during the 18th century, is an important pilgrimage site in northern Transylvania. This monastery houses the renowned wonder-working Madonna<\/a> of Nicula. The icon<\/a> is said to have wept between February 15 and March 12, 1669. During this time, nobles, officers, laity and clergy came to see it. At first they were sceptical, looking at it on both sides, but then humbly crossed themselves and returned home petrified by the wonder they had seen. During the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos<\/a> when the Ortodox Church is commemorating the dormition of the Virgin Mary<\/a>, on August 15, more than 150,000 people from all over the country come to pray and visit the monastery.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
