Description<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Today you will embark on a full day tour to the region of Maramures<\/strong>, famous for its wooden architecture and its UNESCO wooden churches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cross the scenic Prislop gorges<\/strong> and first you will stop in the village of Bogdan Voda<\/strong>, named after Lord Bogdan, the founder of the independent state of Moldova, now part of Romania. Here you will see the local UNESCO wooden church<\/strong>, built in the year 1718 and which is one of the most renowned churches in the region. The St. Nicholas Church does not impress with its size, being only 18 m long and 25 m high, but due to its unique architectural style. It church houses some rare items, among which an episcopal chair dating from the 18th century, and a collection of rare books from the 18th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n

Continue Ieud<\/strong> to visit\u00a0the \u201eBirth of the Virgin<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u201c\u00a0church<\/span><\/strong> which some experts consider to be the oldest standing one in Maramures.\u00a0<\/span>It is now known that marauding Tatars set the initial church on fire in the 17th century and it was totally destroyed. Two 16th century books found in the present church are a proof of the existence of an older church in this place. Its value is also ammplified by the fact that here the oldest document in Romanian, \u201ethe Codex of Ieud\u201c was found.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next you will stop in Barsana<\/strong> to visit the monastery which has existed for some centuries, for a document in 1405 mentions a field of the monastery. The church was used for monastic purposes until 1791, when the monastery was abolished. In 1802, the villagers decided to move the unused church to the middle of the community.\u00a0Here you will also visit the new monastic complex<\/strong> with its main church being with the 56 meter high tower becoming reputedly the tallest wooden structure in Europe<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today’s last stop will be at the Merry Cemetery<\/strong>, famous for it\u2019s unique painted crosses one of it’s kind in the whole world, which represents a unique place of amazing originality. The wooden crosses sculptured and painted by craftsman Stan Patras turned it into an authentic museum. The colors of the crosses and the humorous verses on them capture the essential moments of life and show the strength of the Romanian spirit, unafraid of death.<\/p>\n
